Inspired by Mother’s Day, Sonora wanted to create a day to honor her father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran who single-handedly raised six children after the death of his wife.

Driven by her admiration for her father’s dedication and love, Sonora proposed the idea to local churches, the YMCA, shopkeepers, and government officials. Thanks to her efforts, the first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, in Spokane. The idea quickly caught on, and by the 1920s, Father’s Day was celebrated in many communities across the United States.

Despite its popularity, it wasn’t until 1972 that Father’s Day became an official national holiday. President Richard Nixon signed a proclamation designating the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day, solidifying its place as a time to honor and appreciate fathers everywhere.
